Buying a used coffee machine: evidence to ask the seller for

Check model identity, demonstrated functions, included parts and the total purchase cost of a used machine.

A low asking price becomes useful only when you know which machine, which parts and which condition it buys.

A model name is not a condition report

A used machine’s price tells you little without its exact identity, supplied parts and condition. Ask for a photograph of the model label and the actual appliance, not just the manufacturer’s promotional image. Compare the code with the official documentation before comparing the price with a new machine.

Keep the distinction between used, refurbished and an opened return visible. Read what the seller means by the label and what checks, repairs or cleaning are included. Do not fill in missing promises yourself.

Ask for evidence of ordinary operation

A useful demonstration shows the appliance starting from its normal off state, preparing a drink and operating its milk function if it has one. Ask whether there are leaks, warning messages, unusual interruptions or functions the seller no longer uses.

That demonstration cannot establish internal condition or remaining lifespan. It is evidence of what was shown, not a substitute for an inspection or a service history. Do not open a powered appliance or attempt electrical repairs as a buying check.

For a seller who cannot demonstrate the machine, price the uncertainty into your decision. A large reduction is less persuasive when you cannot establish whether the complete workflow works.

Check the missing-parts total

Find the manufacturer’s supplied-items list and compare it with the listing. Depending on the model, a missing portafilter, basket, milk jug, tank lid or drip-tray part can change the purchase substantially. Obtain the price and availability of the exact replacement before treating it as a minor omission.

Accessory diameters are useful clues, not complete compatibility guarantees. LELIT specifies LELIT57 accessories for Anna PL41TEM; buying a visually similar tool in another size will not solve a missing accessory.

Compare the whole transaction

Add delivery, necessary parts and any known servicing to the asking price. Compare that total with a complete new offer, using the same model generation and included equipment. Ask who handles transport damage and read the seller’s return and support conditions before paying.

We cannot verify the service history or safety of an individual used machine from its model specification. If those points remain unclear, a different listing is often the more useful next step than another attempt to negotiate a few euros off.

Keep the listing, correspondence and invoice together. The phrase “works perfectly” is less useful later than a written description of which functions were demonstrated and which accessories were included.
